HMRC has released new guidance on how the winter fuel payments will be recovered. The winter fuel payments get paid to all state pensions automatically, after which HMRC will look to claw these payments back for anyone who earns over £35,000 a year.
In previous announcements HMRC has stated that these payments will be collected through self-assessment if you are already completing tax returns or via your PAYE coding for 2026/27. The latest announcement from HMRC has confirmed that you cannot pay it back sooner or by any other method.
To assist taxpayers on whether they will have these payments clawed back they have released a calculator to help workout if your income exceeds £35,000 – calculator.
