An improved self-assessment registration service has been launched. If you need to complete a 2025/26 tax return and have never done one before you will need to register by 5 October 2026. Once registered your unique taxpayer reference (UTR) will now be visible through your personal tax account within 72 hours. In the past this was sent in the post and could take up to 15 days.
