HMRC’s chief executive has warned thousands of taxpayers to check their national insurance (NI) records in a recent statement. A problem has been flagged for anyone who was entitled to child benefit from 1978 and 2000.

Parents who look after children are entitled to adjustments on their NI records to ensure they receive the maximum state pension that they are entitled to. However, tens of thousands of parents who claimed child benefit between 1978 and 2000 have not had their NI records adjusted through the Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP).

This was originally flagged back in October 2024; however, the problems appear to be far greater than anyone expected. Many claimants who didn’t provide their NI number prior to 2000 haven’t received the NI adjustment through HRP.

Those who claimed child benefit between 1978 and 2000 should check their NI records to see if they are eligible for a full state pension.
