Individuals who claimed child benefit prior to May 2000 may have missed out on qualifying state pension contributions due to a nuance within HMRC’s systems.

Receiving certain benefits can ensure your entitlement to a state pension.  Since 2010 national insurance (NI) credits are automatically awarded to your NI record for qualifying years. However, before 2010 this was known as home responsibilities protection (HRP) and any claimants who didn’t include their NI number on their applications may not have been awarded any credits. This means that potentially you will receive a lower state pension than you should.

HMRC is currently working with the DWP (Department of Work and Pensions) and is asking for anyone affected to check whether they need to make a claim to update their NI records.

If you think you might have been affected, please get in touch so that we can check and help with any potential claim.
