NI Contributions – Deadline
Having any gaps in your national insurance (NI) contributions can have an impact on your state pension entitlement, without enough qualifying years you may not be entitled to your full state pension. Any gaps could have come from breaks in employment, insufficient income from only working part time or various other reasons. In the worst case if you don’t have at least 10 years of qualifying contributions you won’t be eligible for any state pension.
Good news though, HMRC allows voluntary Class 3 NI payments to increase your number of qualifying years of contributions to maximise your state pension entitlement. Normally HMRC only allows this for the past 6 years, however currently they are allowing voluntary contributions going back to April 2006. This opportunity was due to end on 31 July 2023 but has recently been extended to 5 April 2025.
